PABA (Para-Aminobenzoic Acid) (Also known as 4-Aminobenzoic Acid)

Beneficial For :

  • Dermatomyositis
  • Infertility
  • Pemphigus
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Scleroderma
  • Vitiligo

Why you need it?

PABA is the abbreviation for para-aminobenzoic acid, a compound that is loosely considered to be a member of the vitamin B-Complex.

PABA appears to enhance the effects of cortisone, oestrogen, and possibly other hormones by delaying their breakdown in the liver. PABA also prevents or even reverses the accumulation of abnormal fibrous tissue.

PABA helps maintain skin health, pigmentation and intestinal health. It aids the breakdown and utilization of proteins and formation of red blood cells. It also stimulates intestinal bacteria to produce folic acid.

Deficiency Symptoms:

Deficiencies of PABA have not been described in humans.

Good Food Sources:

Brewer's yeast, whole grain products, milk, eggs, yoghurt, wheat germ, molasses and liver. PABA is also synthesized by friendly bacteria in the healthy intestines.

Precautions

GRAS- Generally recognized as safe. No adverse reactions, side effects or overdose symptoms expected when taken within the recommended amounts.

There are no known interactions between PABA and other nutrients. However, PABA interferes with sulpha drugs (a class of antibiotics) and therefore should not be taken when these medications are being used.

No serious side effects have been reported with up to 300-400mg per day. Larger amounts (such as 8grams per day or more) may cause low blood sugar, rash, fever, and (on rare occasions) liver damage.

Small amounts of PABA are present in some B-Complex vitamins and multivitamins formulas. The amount of PABA used for the conditions described above ranges from 300mg per day and up to 12 grams per day for auto-immune, connective tissue, or skin disorders. Anyone considering taking more than 400mg of PABA per day should consult a nutritionally orientated physician.
