Here’s another reason you need to make sure you are getting enough iron. A new study discovered that people with anaemia have about a 41% higher risk of dementia than individuals without iron deficiencies. Researchers found this link by following 2,552 adults between the ages of 70 and 79 for eleven years. Participants were tested for anaemia and completed various memory and thinking tests.
Out of the participants with anaemia, 23% developed dementia while only 17% of individuals without anaemia developed dementia. Researchers believe the low oxygen levels caused by anaemia may be responsible for the increased dementia risk.
