Echinacea Explained
It has been suggested that it may also be used to treat pain, inflammation, migraines and other health issues. But there is sufficient evidence to believe it can act as a strong treatment and/or preventative measure for the common cold and flu.
What is Echinacea?
Echinacea is the name given to a group of flowering plants in the daisy family. Native to North America, the group has nine species but only three are used in herbal supplements-Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea pallida.
How can it help us?
1. Echinacea plants are filled with plant compounds that function as antioxidants. Antioxidants help defend your cells against oxidative stress, a state that has been linked to chronic illness.
2. Many studies have found that it may help your immune system combat infections and viruses, which could help you recover faster from illness. This is one reason why Echinacea is often used to prevent or treat the common cold.
3. Echinacea may lower blood sugar levels. Echinacea purpurea is thought to suppress enzymes that digest carbohydrates which would reduce the amount of sugar entering your blood if consumed.
4. In recent years, Echinacea has emerged as a potential aid for anxiety. Certain compounds found in the Echinacea plant have been linked to reducing anxiety. Similarly with inflammation, Echinacea can assist with symptoms.
